The Students of Ocean 480

Global Ocean - Human Culture - 2018  Jan 20

JRD Synthesis of One-Page Student Prospectus on Term Project

To be discussed in class - Jan 22

Angel J. Alcaraz - Hazards & Disasters - Pros & Cons of Offshore drilling with minimum bias.  Is there a viable solution to launching a sustainable transition from burning fossil fuels to more environmentally friendly sources of energy?

Monique Sophia Bell - Three Questions: 1) Why do humans so energetically design new technologies to kill one another? 2) Source of Hatred? Is it unavoidable?  3) What are the boundaries, differences, and commonalities between Art and Science?

Addie Biesel - Pollution, Plastics and Micro-plastics - Where from & What impacts on Ocean/life/food chain?; Why resistance to change: ie solving the problem with biodegradable components? How influence society re: Ocean Health-what works & what does not? & Why?

Joe N. Bretl - Create compelling ensemble of stories about serious ocean issues and the evolving nature of tech development - Goals: Potential solutions and audience engagement.

Heather Deng - 1) Explore Art/Philosophy related to the Sea from Chinese/SE Asian perspective-contrast w Western views; 2) Controversies associated with Environmental Protection and its political implications.

Parker Hayne - Explore Impacts of different religious views on how a particular culture approached the sea - (for some, it is there to be used, others, it is there to be protected-JRD)

Jacob Huskey - GeoEngineering vs Next Gen Biomimicry to address crucial, but potentially controversial issues - Generate power, vs. C-sequestration.  Leans toward start-up strategy.

Brendan Kellogg - 1) Web Application to reach non-Ocean Citizens with Compelling Ocean Themes; 2) How can Computer Science significantly help Ocean Scientists?

Joshua Lai - 1) Mining Manganese Nodules (and possibly Submarine Sulfides) benefits/liabilities; 2) Plastics - impacts of changing supply chains if restrictions are possible/successful.

Bing Yu Lee - Differing Cultural & Practical perspectives on tsunami risk zones around the “Ring of Fire”.  Are those cultural differences changing with rapidly evolving technologies?  How closely coupled are evolving science insights and changing societal behavior?

Ashley Lobao - International perspective on Controversies related to: 1) ’reclaiming land and its impact on society, environment and economy’; or, 2) ‘who has the right to the ocean’s resources’.  “Common heritage of Mankind” - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arvid_Pardo

Yashwant Meghare -1) May become a “Generalist Oceanographer” - Short Film, interview people re: Ocean Awareness/Ocean Solutions;  2) Transform Waste Plastic to Carbon/Graphite nanotubes, Diamonds?  Find profit making solution to plastics in ocean.

Kevin Pszczola - How human-ocean interactions changed course of History; 1) how tech changes might influence national paths, 2) Evaluate impacts of hypothetical Future event.

Rachel Scott - Resources and Hazards - effectively “Are humans a risk to humans via ocean systems? and, If so, what impact on sustainable Ocean Resources?”
